Metabolic syndrome is a clinical condition characterized by the presence of multiple metabolic disorders simultaneously, each of which also represents a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when there are three or more of the following risk factors:
- High amounts of abdominal adipose tissue (which can be quantified by measuring the waist circumference): are considered pathological measures exceeding 94 cm in men and 80 cm in women).
- Reduced cholesterol (HDL, the “good cholesterol”): less than 40 mg / dl (men) and less than 50 mg / dL (in women).
- High levels of triglycerides values greater than 150 mg / dL.
- High blood pressure: greater than 135/85 mmHg
- High blood sugar levels: fasting blood glucose greater than 100 mg / dL.
